The End of the Road

We started today (Oct 4) off in Barstow, Ca. It was an absolutely beautiful morning so we put the top down for our final drive on Route 66.

This is the McDonald's in Barstow. Very cool. Interesting - our standard breakfast on this trip has been a sausage burrito and sweet tea for Sparky and an egg McMuffin and Diet Dr. Pepper for me. It has been between $5.50 and $7.50 every morning, depending on the price of the Egg McMuffin. The morning we were leaving the Grand Canyon, exact same breakfast came to $15. Ouch!! No dollar menu like we had taken advantage of all across the country.

If you look closely at this picture, you can see the clouds above and below the mountains in the background. That was the rain that we were going to hit later in the day. The rain that hovered over LA all day.

There are two Wigwam Motels left on Route 66, the one that we stayed at in Holbrook, AZ and this one in San Bernadino, CA.

And yes, they do have WalMarts in LA, or at least in the cities that surround LA. This one was in Rialto. We stayed true to Route 66 and traveled it all the way through LA. It took us much longer but we went through many communities on the way. We passed through San Bernadino, Rialto, Rancho Cucamonga, Azusa, Arcadia, Pasadena, Glendale, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and finally Santa Monica. I always thought all of that was just one big city, LA, but I have since learned that they all consider themselves to be separate cities, even though they run into one another.

This is Colorado Blvd. The Rose Parade comes down this street.

This is a shot going down Sunset Blvd.

When we came to Vine Street we realized that Hollywood Blvd. was just a few blocks away so we took a detour to Hollywood and Vine. (That's what's written on the side of that building). I kinda wish we had had the time to knock around there for a while. We passed Rodeo Dr. and Beverly Hills. We would have seen the Hollywood sign up on the hill except that it was so overcast and cloudy. No show.

The end of the journey. The pier at Santa Monica. I did not realize until we got there that there would be a sign to commemorate the task. Wish we could have gotten a picture together but we were just so glad to be there. Over 2000 miles and so much fun, we reached the end of the journey. (Now we have to turn around and come home.)

These were taken at the end of the pier looking out over the Pacific Ocean. We had planned all along to walk on the sand and put our feet in the Pacific but with the rain and wind and cold, we opted for pictures instead. BTW, the weather man this morning said that they had not had rain in LA since May. MAY!!! And they get rain today. And a cold, icky rain too. Oh well, it did not dampen our spirits at all, just our walk on the beach.

We ate lunch at Bubba Gumps. You again will notice that we both had on our Bama hoodies. We were not on the pier for very long but at least 3 people stopped us to talk about the Arkansas and Florida games. The server at Bubba Gumps said "Roll Tide" to us and I asked him if he was a Bama fan. He said, "I'll root for anyone if they are that good." Nuff said. :-)

This a shot of the traffic on our way out of town. Actually, I think this was probably pretty light from what I hear.

The hills outside LA. I had no idea that it was like this.

A storm's a brewing.

Hailstorm. A hailstorm is very unnerving in a convertible. And very loud. Looks as though no damage was done to the car though. Sparky was driving and I was praying.

We passed miles and miles of vineyards.

Our final destination for the night.
